Artist Statement

When I was a child, I would sit in front of the TV and watch the same movie over and over again. I would study how the characters talked; what they would say, but more importantly, what they wouldn’t say. I always found it very interesting from a young age how people conceal the information they are holding. Humans have an astounding ability to hide our inner emotions and as a writer I have always tried to explore the boundary of that social tool.

In writing, I like to focus on authenticity by using my personal history to drive the stories I tell. I prefer to be extremely vulnerable while writing, sharing the darkest parts of myself to give a level of realism. In my writing there is a heavy focus on the beauty in human flaws. I believe that every individual can be beautiful despite their most challenging aspects of their life. When it comes to writing dialogue, I use real conversations with my loved ones to fuel the characters’ conversations as well as a way to add my personal history to the script.

I strive to create films that go deeper beneath the surface of what you can see on the screen because there is much more to each of us than what we can see. By nature, humans are uniquely complex in mental capacity for understanding each other and I challenge audiences to understand my films and character in that same personal and intimate way.
